Steal this D&D 5e Magic Item: Clever Rope

Let’s face it: at every table, there’s always someone who wants to have a pet. My wife still mourns 5e’s axing of the Druid animal companion. She’s a habitual pet-collector. In the spirit of appeasing my wife and staying off the couch, I created the following magical item to scratch a little bit of that itch.

Presenting for your enjoyment and domestic tranquility:

Clever Rope

Wondrous Item, Uncommon

This unassuming coil of hempen rope is twenty-five feet long. Unlike most ropes, it appears to be unaffected by time and weather: never fraying, never kinking, always unspooling smoothly and lying flat.

Clever Rope is animated rope, possessed of an intelligence roughly equivalent to a faithful dog. It has a movement speed of 25′ per round (walking/climbing). It even knows some tricks. Every Clever Rope can:

  • Knot/Unknot
  • Coil
  • “C’mere, Rope.”

A Clever Rope can memorize six tricks in total, forgetting a random trick for every trick memorized beyond six. Tricks are taught with a DC 15 Handle Animal check. Common tricks include:

  • Entangle
  • Anchor
  • Brace
  • Scale
  • Pull
  • Fetch

Condition Immunities: blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, paralyzed, petrified, poisoned
Senses: Blindsight 60′, Passive Perception 6

Antimagic Susceptibility: Clever Rope is incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic field. If targeted by dispel magic, the Clever Rope must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against the caster’s spell save DC or fall unconscious for 1 minute.

Entangle: Melee weapon attack +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Large or smaller creature. Hit: The creature is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained. In addition, at the start of each of the target’s turns, the target takes 13 (2d8+3) bludgeoning damage as the rope constricts.

When a Clever Rope is reduced to 0 hit points it falls to pieces (or is burned to ash, blasted into its component atoms, etc). A destroyed Clever Rope may be returned to faithful service through a ritual in which a single piece of the destroyed Clever Rope is woven into another 25′ piece of rope. The process consumes 100 gp of materials.
